A Month at the Beach in Winter: A Sunny, Lazy Day

Scenes from our lovely, sunny, breezy, 72 degree day!

I rented a bike last evening to keep for the week. It is a comfort style beach bike with rust-resistant chain and aluminum handle bars to hold up to the conditions at the sea.

This morning we started our day just after sunrise with a short walk on the beach, just a mile or two..

Returned to camp for homemade bran muffins and cherry preserves..

Then I hopped on my bike and took a spin around the place, past the visitor's center, past the alligators, down to the front gate, back through the causeway drive, to the campsite of some friends of mine, and then back to our place...Evie didn't even recognize me until I dismounted the bike.

After a lunch of albacore tuna, relish and mayo, a crunchy apple, and a little chat with the camera toting woman who said she thinks we have the perfect dog, Mom has headed off for the bathhouse and Evie and I are relaxing inside our little air conditioned place by the sea.

And somewhere in there, I have been receiving good news from home: Courtney's graduate school applications are rolling back in, and at least one of her choices has offered her a place in their PhD English program, with teaching assistantship besides.

Life is good, and I am so very grateful.

A Month at the Beach in Winter: A Very Windy Day!

When Grandma arrived yesterday, Evie was quite excited to receive her at our camper door...

After a brief escape to the waiting dogs in the street nearby, and then a leap into the pen of the Great Pyrenees dogs next door, Evie was captured and returned to site #74, and relative peace was restored.

Afterward, Grandma made up her small single bed with fresh sheets and a fluffy down comforter from home, and our little Evie decided to make a claim for it.

There was a brief tussle as I tried to coax her back to my double bed in the camper...and then Evie seemingly won when she landed right back on Grandma's bed after Grandma was tucked in for the night.

I lept out of my own warm bed and using first cheese, and then a leash held firmly in hand, brought our mischievous pup back to my side and prevailed for the rest of the night.

Around 4:00 AM it started to rain, and then at dawn we walked out to the ocean to greet the moody sky...

And then we returned to camp and sat down for two cups of coffee and homemade muffins spread with cherry preserves.

Then gale forced winds drove us inside after extinguishing our stove and blowing our wash basin across the way.

So now we three are taking refuge inside, warm and cozy and bracing ourselves from the 35 mile per hour gusts outside.

A Month at the Beach in Winter: She's Here!

It rained hard last night, but Evie and I stayed dry in our little place by the sea. She had never experienced thunder and lightning, and I was pleased to see that she remained calm.

And then when morning came, we set about cleaning and organizing and waiting for our special guest to arrive.

About noon we decided to go on an alligator hunt...

..and came up with three, plus one poor expired duck being thrashed to and fro...

And just as we came home to rest up a bit, a little knock came on our door...

Grandma's here! And she's bringing glad tidings and care packages from home.

And now we are overjoyed!

A Month at the Beach in Winter: Company

Having completed two of our four weeks here at the beach, Evie and I are breaking with routine and doing something new for the second half of our stay.

We slept in past sunrise this morning, and then walked on the beach at a later time of day. Instead of seeing sand dollars, flocks of birds, and a porpoise or two, today we found a horseshoe crab washed up in the surf.

And then we returned to camp to "build" an annex onto our home.

After all, if we're going to last another two weeks, it's time to build an addition!

I had thrown our large family tent into the car in case the weather turned bad and we needed a little extra space to hang out. Instead, it will serve as an overflow room for clothes, books, and things that tend to pile up and expand after a little while of camping...

....and the reason we've decided to do it now is because "company is coming!"

That, right! My mom is going to join us at the beach tomorrow...and we can hardly wait!!

A Month at the Beach in Winter: Halfway Through

Today marks the beginning of our third week at the beach, and though it is only a little past noon, it has been the perfect day.

Perhaps it's because we have been walking about 40 miles a week and are learning to hit our (loose-leashed!) stride...

...or maybe it's because it's a beautiful, warm and sunny day...

...or because we began the day at sunrise and reveled in the colorful dawn...

...or was it the fishing boat that captured our interest, floating there just a little bit off shore?

...or maybe it was going to Mass at 8:30 AM , as has become our routine...

You could add in too, the playdate we had when we drove back "home" as Lily and her parents were heading out to the beach and invited us to come along...(Lily is 2 years old to Evie's 9 months...and they make a well-matched pair!)

...the run in the frothy surf....

...the meeting of new friends who happened upon us and yes, introduced three more Goldens to the party...

...or perhaps the cold rinse afterward under the hose...

...and now a snooze in the sunny, sun sun ...

Yes, it all adds up to a pretty perfect day, and we feel so very blessed.

Sending our Love,
Ronda & Evie

A Month at the Beach in Winter: Doing What You Really Want to Do.

The first time I ran away to the beach, I was a rising senior at UNC and working in my dream job: a summer internship at IBM. Though my position was as a secretary's helper, I hoped that getting my foot in the door would help me to get hired full time after my graduation from college.

But boy, was I disappointed! As I arrived at work each day, I sang, "Hello" to the engineers who filled the offices. Unlike the friendly faces who filled the rooms along the halls of my college dormitories, these men were introverted and somewhat gruff. And then the woman whom I worked for would fly off the handle if I entered the daily mail in her mail log imperfectly and then arrive the next morning with flowers as a way of apology.

Before the summer was half over I was crying in my room at home and unable to see how I could see it through. I remember my mother coming in, sitting down on my bed beside me, and asking me what I really wanted.

"I want to quit my job and run away to the beach!" I shouted through tears and sobs.

"Well, why don't you?" She gently responded.

To which I responded, "You mean, I can?"

And so I went into my job the next day, asked to see the manager, told him of my clashes with his secretary, and announced that I wanted to quit.

"Why didn't you come to me sooner?" He asked, surprised and dismayed.

But by then I was exasperated and determined to leave.

And so I did. I packed up the car with a tent, a cooler, and a few clothes and headed to the Outer Banks of North Carolina. And what a wonderful trip it was! I moved from campground to campground along the windy ocean shore until I ended up on Ocracoke Island where the surf was the most rugged and the ocean was delightfully warm. Unfortunately there was not a lick of shade and so I rode the free ferry between Hatteras Island and Ocracoke during the hottest part of the day to at least enjoy a little breeze. And after a week or so, my money ran out and so I called home to ask Mom to wire me more.

The first thing I bought was a cold pack of beer and shared it with the families around me who had been so gracious: inviting me for afternoon cocktails and h'orderves on one side, and for cards at the picnic table after dark on the other. I noticed that when I travelled alone, people were more apt to be friendly and say hello.

Soon afterward I took the two and a half hour ferry ride to shore and then drove down to Carolina Beach State Park. By the time ten days were through I was back home and looking forward to returning to college for my last year.

Looking back on those times, I realize now how important it is to follow your heart, to do the thing that you really want to do, and don't look back. You will either find fulfillment and joy, or if chastened, you can choose again and do what your heart is calling you to do.

A Month at the Beach in Winter: Venturing Out in Safety

Well, it's been a week since I've written and the days have come and gone with an abiding sense of peacefulness and security.

The Lord is your guardian;
The Lord is your shade at your right hand.
By day the sun cannot harm you, Nor the moon by night.
The Lord will guard you from all evil,
Will always guard your life.
The Lord will guard your coming and going both now and forever.
(Psalm 121:5-8)
